Every year, thousands of international students move abroad with excitement, ambition, and uncertainty. While universities provide academic support, everyday challenges—finding trusted places, making friends, discovering events, understanding local transport, and navigating an unfamiliar city—are often left to fragmented platforms and chance encounters.
Padi was born from a simple question:
What if settling into a new country felt less like starting over and more like being welcomed by a friend?
Padi is a mobile experience designed to help international students transition from arrival to belonging by bringing together everything they need in one place. Rather than relying on scattered WhatsApp groups, Instagram pages, Facebook communities, or Google Maps, Padi creates a unified ecosystem where students can discover people, places, services, and communities that matter from the moment they arrive.
Relocating to another country isn't simply about finding accommodation or enrolling at university.
It's about rebuilding an entire life.
Students often arrive without local networks, trusted recommendations, or confidence navigating unfamiliar environments. Although useful information exists, it's spread across multiple platforms, making discovery frustrating and unreliable.
During research, I found that students constantly switched between:
Each platform solved a small part of the problem, but none supported the complete journey of settling into a new city. Information became buried, duplicated, outdated, or difficult to trust.
The challenge wasn't a lack of information.
It was a lack of connection.
Design a platform that helps international students settle into a new country by making discovery, connection, and integration effortless.
The product needed to:
This became the guiding principle throughout the project.
Find your people. Know your city.
Instead of immediately designing interfaces, I spent time understanding why existing platforms failed to support international students.
A comparative analysis of popular apps revealed a common pattern.
Each product excelled at one task while ignoring the broader relocation experience.

Rather than designing another messaging app, I repositioned Padi as an arrival platform.
The experience focuses on helping users move confidently through the first stages of relocation by connecting them to:
Padi becomes a companion that guides users from uncertainty to confidence, acting more like a trusted local friend than a traditional social platform.
Because the product centred around belonging rather than navigation, the visual identity needed to communicate warmth before technology.
I explored several creative directions inspired by:
Instead of leaning into corporate travel branding, I intentionally explored softer visual metaphors including hugging hands, smiling faces, welcoming gestures, homes, and human-centred symbols. These explorations helped shift the identity from "travel app" to "friend on arrival."

The strongest concept emerged from combining two universally recognised symbols:
This direction represented more than navigation.
It symbolised finding your people.
Multiple iterations refined how two individuals could be integrated into a single location marker while maintaining simplicity and recognisability.
Later explorations introduced emoji-inspired expressions to reinforce warmth, personality, and approachability, helping the brand feel supportive rather than transactional.

Designing Padi wasn't just about creating individual screens—it was about designing a complete relocation experience. Every touchpoint was intentionally mapped to reduce uncertainty and guide international students from their first day in a new country to feeling confident, connected, and settled.
The journey begins with a simple, welcoming onboarding flow where users introduce themselves, select their country and university, choose their interests, and create a profile. Rather than collecting information for the sake of registration, each step personalises the experience, allowing Padi to recommend relevant people, communities, events, and local services from the very beginning.
Once onboarded, users are guided through a practical relocation checklist. Instead of overwhelming students with information, Padi prioritises the essential tasks that every newcomer needs to complete—opening a UK bank account, getting a SIM card, applying for a National Insurance number, registering with a GP, and completing university registration. This transforms what is often a confusing process into a clear, actionable journey.
With the essentials in place, users enter the core experience through a simple bottom navigation that separates key activities into Home, Explore, Messages, People, and Profile. The Home feed acts as a personalised dashboard, surfacing trusted local services, community discussions, events, and a student marketplace. Explore encourages discovery through categories, nearby recommendations, and curated content, while Messages and People make it easy to build genuine relationships through direct conversations, group chats, and suggested connections based on shared interests or university.
Finally, the Profile area gives users ownership of their identity, allowing them to manage their information, share updates, save useful content, and customise their experience. By connecting practical relocation support with meaningful social interaction, the journey evolves naturally from completing essential tasks to building lasting friendships and becoming part of a local community.
The entire experience is built around a single goal: helping international students move from arrival to belonging—one meaningful interaction at a time.

Before moving into visual design, I focused on defining the structure and behaviour of the product through low-fidelity wireframes. This stage allowed me to explore multiple layouts, validate user flows, and prioritise functionality without being distracted by colours, typography, or branding.
Each screen was designed around a specific user goal, ensuring that every interaction felt intuitive and purposeful. I mapped out the complete experience—from onboarding and profile creation to discovering local services, connecting with people, joining communities, and completing essential relocation tasks. By breaking the product into simple, focused screens, I was able to identify friction points early and refine the navigation before moving into high-fidelity designs.
The wireframes also helped establish a clear information hierarchy across the application. Key actions were surfaced first, while secondary content remained accessible without overwhelming users. This iterative process made it easier to test ideas, simplify complex workflows, and ensure that each feature supported Padi's core mission of helping international students settle into a new city with confidence.
By validating the product architecture at the wireframe stage, I created a strong foundation that made the transition to polished UI design faster, more consistent, and centred around real user needs.

With the user flows and wireframes validated, I translated the product into a polished interface that balanced functionality with approachability. The visual language was intentionally designed to feel warm, welcoming, and easy to navigate—reflecting Padi's role as a trusted companion for students arriving in a new country.
Each screen was designed around a specific user need. The onboarding experience introduces users to the platform through a simple, personalised setup, while the home screen surfaces the most relevant information at a glance, including local services, events, community updates, and practical resources. Rather than overwhelming users with options, the interface prioritises the actions that matter most during the early stages of relocation.
The Explore section encourages discovery through curated content, nearby recommendations, and interest-based categories, making it easier for students to uncover places, activities, and opportunities within their city. Dedicated People and Messages screens support meaningful connections by helping users find others with shared interests, start conversations, and participate in community group chats. Meanwhile, the Profile area provides a central space for managing personal information, saved content, and account preferences.
Throughout the design process, I focused on creating a consistent component system, clear visual hierarchy, and accessible interaction patterns. Generous spacing, rounded elements, and soft colour palettes reinforce the friendly nature of the product while ensuring information remains easy to scan and navigate.
The result is a cohesive mobile experience that guides users naturally from completing essential relocation tasks to building genuine relationships and confidently settling into their new environment.

Padi was designed as more than a mobile application—it was envisioned as a brand that supports students throughout their relocation journey, both online and in the real world. To explore how the identity could exist beyond the interface, I extended the visual system across a range of environmental and marketing touchpoints.
The campaign uses bold typography, vibrant colours, friendly illustrations, and authentic photography to communicate a simple message: you don't have to navigate a new city alone. Outdoor billboards and campus advertisements were designed to capture attention in high-traffic areas such as universities, transport hubs, and student accommodation, introducing Padi at the exact moment students begin their journey.
The visual language remains consistent across every touchpoint, reinforcing feelings of warmth, connection, and belonging. Rather than promoting features, the campaign focuses on the emotional outcome of the product—helping students discover their city, meet new people, and feel at home from day one.
Exploring these real-world applications ensured the brand could confidently scale beyond the digital product, creating a cohesive experience wherever students first encounter Padi.

Padi evolved into more than a concept for helping international students relocate.
It became a vision for transforming one of life's most overwhelming experiences into one that feels welcoming, supported, and genuinely human.
By combining community discovery, trusted recommendations, local services, events, and meaningful social connections into a single experience, Padi reduces the friction of moving abroad while encouraging confidence, independence, and belonging from day one.
Rather than asking students to adapt to fragmented platforms, Padi adapts to their journey—meeting them at the moment they need support most.
